Typing test methodology
Clear rules make scores comparable. TypeMaster Pro follows widely used standards so your WPM means the same thing across sessions.
Word definition
One word = 5 characters (including spaces). This is the standard used by most professional typing tests worldwide.
WPM
Gross WPM ≈ (characters typed ÷ 5) ÷ minutes.
Net WPM applies an error penalty so mistakes reduce the score. We emphasize accuracy alongside speed because uncorrected errors hurt real-world useful typing.
Accuracy
Accuracy is correct keystrokes divided by total keystrokes, expressed as a percentage. High WPM with low accuracy is a weak result for jobs and exams.
Fairness principles
- • Same formulas across modes so progress is meaningful
- • Exam simulators can disable backspace when the real test does
- • Multilingual tests still use transparent timing and accuracy rules
- • No inflated scores from ignoring errors
