What is WPM?
WPM means words per minute. It is the standard way typing tests measure speed. On TypeMaster Pro and most professional tests, one “word” equals five keystrokes (letters, spaces, and punctuation count).
How WPM is calculated
Basic formula: total characters typed ÷ 5 ÷ minutes. A 60-second test with 300 correct characters is 300 ÷ 5 ÷ 1 = 60 WPM.
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Gross WPM | Speed before subtracting errors |
| Net WPM | Speed after error penalties (more realistic) |
| Accuracy | Correct keystrokes ÷ total keystrokes |
What is a good WPM?
- • Under 25 WPM — beginner; focus on accuracy and home row
- • 25–40 WPM — typical casual / two-finger range
- • 40–60 WPM — solid everyday / many office roles
- • 60–80 WPM — strong professional range
- • 80+ WPM — advanced; competitive with practice games
Always pair speed with accuracy. 70 WPM at 92% accuracy is often worse for work than 55 WPM at 98%.
How to improve your WPM
- Learn touch typing (see our touch typing guide)
- Prioritize accuracy before pushing speed
- Practice daily short sessions (10–20 minutes)
- Use games and timed tests to stay consistent
- Track net WPM, not only gross speed
